Before you scroll through these images we need to get real for a minute.
Some days just kind of suck. Seriously. It doesn’t matter if you have kids, are single, whatever, some days are just a bit rough.
Our family outing this month was one of ‘those’ days, and I seriously considered opting out of posting this month, or reshooting the following day but as a documentary family photographer I feel it is important that I show these days right along with the sunshine, lollipop and rainbow days. I think and somewhat hope (correct me if I’m wrong) other people have these days too and sharing with each other and having compassion for what others are going through is what makes us human. It takes a village to raise a family, our village just happens to live on the other side of the globe so it makes these days particularly difficult and why sharing online – for me – is an outlet.
Fortunately, I can say that ‘those days’ are few and far between, but I want to call it for what it is. The kids were tired, we were tired, it’s been a long week, and we were all just a bit over it.
These days (as awful as they are) are just as important and worthy of showing as the good ones because we are real people, we are a real family, we are not perfect because perfection is unrealistic and unattainable. We are perfectly us, warts and all.
What I do know is that my family won’t be young forever. I know that the toddler tantrums won’t last and the 2am visits to my bed will soon come to an end. I also know that in 20 years from now, when my children are off doing their own things that I might even miss these days because scheduling time that we can all get together for a family outing will be hard.
I guess I just want to say it is ok. It is ok to acknowledge these days because this is life with three young kids, and tomorrow is another day that might be filled with rainbows, lollipops and sunshine.
So, with that said, venture forth and enjoy these images for their honesty, truth and reality and here’s to a brighter tomorrow!
Also, perhaps not the best choice of outing – skating while taking photos… hmmm I’m not quite that talented (aka Canadian) just yet.. Anyway, this is us – a family outing to the Rideau Canal for a skate.
